Chiltern Railways has warned passengers of short notice cancellations and 'disruption' during the festive period.  

The train operator issued travel advice ahead of one of the busiest times on Britain’s roads and railways.

During the festive period from Sunday, December 24, until Monday, January 1, Chiltern Railways operates an amended timetable.

Chiltern Railways said: “Train services will be extremely busy and vary each day.

“There may be some short-notice cancellations and alterations. Please check before you travel.”

Christmas and New Year train travel 

 

Normal service is planned to run on Saturday, December 23. However, there is a “high risk” of short-notice cancellations and disruption across “all routes.”

Passengers should travel “as early as possible” on Christmas Eve, December 24 while anticipating short notice cancellations and alterations to service. Services will finish early.

“Chiltern Railways services between London Marylebone and Oxford are expected to be extremely busy as they will be the only direct services between London and Oxford. London Paddington will be affected by engineering works,” the company said.

No services will run on Christmas Day (Monday, December 25).

Trains on Boxing Day (Tuesday, December 26) will call at principal stations only between London Marylebone and Oxford Parkway and trains will run twice an hour between 8am and 10pm.

The principal stations are London Marylebone, Wembley Stadium, Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, High Wycombe, Princes Risborough, Haddenham & Thame Parkway, Bicester Village and Oxford Parkway.

Trains between London Marylebone and Oxford are expected to to be busy on Wednesday, December 27. Rail replacement bus will operate between Aylesbury Vale Parkway and Amersham for connection with London Underground services at Amersham as there are no trains on the London Marylebone to Aylesbury Vale Parkway via Amersham route.

A slightly reduced and amended weekday timetable will operate between Thursday, December 28 and Saturday, December 30.

Normal train service is expected on Sunday, December 31, but Chiltern Railways warned of short notice cancellations and disruption on the day across all routes and customers should check their journey “carefully immediately” before travel.

Additional late-night trains will run from London Marylebone, including three late-night trains via High Wycombe.

A slightly reduced and amended weekday timetable will operate on Monday, January 1, with rail replacement in operation from Aylesbury Vale Parkway via Amersham to Beaconsfield for a London connection.

A normal timetable will operate from Tuesday, January 2.
