New data has revealed that 68 per cent of Ukrainian households that are homeless, or are at risk of becoming homeless, have been successfully rehomed by Buckinghamshire Council.

According to the data from the Government’s Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, this means that 32 per cent are still waiting to find suitable accommodation.

The council say they are dedicated to finding families permanent and suitable homes "as soon as possible."

According to the data, which was first published in February 2022 and updated last month (September), 139 Ukrainian households in Buckinghamshire were owed a prevention or relief duty, which is used to help with a person’s housing situation within 56 days of becoming homeless.

Of those are 132 households with children, with the other half (61) single people.

Despite the government figures, Buckinghamshire Council believe 120 Ukrainian refugees living in Bucks need temporary accommodation.

Martin Tett, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, said:  "From February 2022 to September 2023, 193 Ukrainian refugees living in Buckinghamshire needed temporary accommodation.

"Our teams have been dedicated to finding them permanent and suitable homes as soon as possible. As a result, we have reduced the number of Ukrainian refugees in temporary accommodation to 25, who are from 10 Ukrainian families. Some of these have already accepted our offers of new homes.

"Our Ukraine programme team works tirelessly with sponsors, potential new sponsors, our Ukrainian guests and community groups across the county to ensure temporary accommodation is a last resort.

"The team work collaboratively with our housing department to look at all available options for our guests in relation to housing. These include options such as exploring a rematch with a new sponsor whilst also reviewing guests' finances with a view to them moving into private rental.

"Buckinghamshire residents can find out more about how to become a Rematching Sponsor, providing a local, welcoming and safe space by offering to share your home, by going to: www.buckinghamshire.gov.uk/ukraine-rematch"

Since February 2022, over 180,000 Ukrainians have arrived in the UK via two housing schemes. The Ukraine Family Scheme allows Ukrainians to join family members who are already based in the UK, while Homes for Ukraine allows UK citizens to host Ukrainian nationals with no links to the UK.
