A centenarian celebrated yet another milestone as she reached 105 years old and exclusively revealed her past life.
Residents and staff at Royal Star and Garter care home in High Wycombe celebrated Ena Mitchell's big day with a huge cake, card and flowers on Saturday, September 30.
Ena, who was born in Kingsley, Hampshire in 1918, was widowed in World War II when her husband, Bill, an East Yorkshire Regiment soldier, was killed in action.
The Second World War not only took Ena's husband but spurred her into action for the rights of war widows, leading her to the War Widows’ Association (WWA).
Bill, who had married Ena in 1938, formed part of the 330,000 troops who were successfully evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940.
He later took part in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, surviving the offensive only to be killed later that year by enemy fire in Belgium.
Royal Star & Garter, a charity providing compassionate care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia, has been Ena's home since 2019.
The charity also helps veterans at its Solihull and Surbiton homes.
