Buckinghamshire Council has called on the Mayor of London to withdraw a proposal by Transport for London (TfL) for scrapping the sale of Day Travelcards for individuals travelling into and around the capital.

This request comes after an overwhelming consensus was reached by all political parties during a recent full Council meeting.

Councillor Martin Tett, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, penned a letter to, Sadiq Khan expressing his concerns.

The letter highlights how Day Travelcards offer unlimited travel on TfL services, including the London Underground, buses, trams, the Docklands Light Railway, the London Overground, the Elizabeth Line, as well as National Rail services in London.

The cards can also be used to obtain a one-third reduction in fares for River Services.

Tett argues that the proposed elimination of Day Travelcards is an 'unjust, unacceptable, and burdensome financial burden' on Buckinghamshire residents who wish to visit London.

Moreover, he claims that the proposals specifically target the removal of Day Travelcards as a means to generate additional revenue for TfL.

Tett goes on to mention that TfL's own consultation anticipates that rail operators will stop selling Zone 1-6 travelcards if the Day Travelcards are withdrawn.

This would create barriers and hinder ease of travel to London—a contradictory move, considering evidence suggests that integrated ticketing improves passenger journeys and public transport use.

The proposals also fail to consider the potential loss of revenue to the London economy that may occur due to increased travel costs as Buckinghamshire residents face being priced out of the capital.

Various sectors, including employers, retail and leisure businesses, theatres, and more, may witness a decline in revenue as residents reduce their time or spending in London.

Additionally, the elimination of Day Travelcards is seen as potentially discriminatory against Buckinghamshire residents who have special needs or disabilities.

These individuals have previously been able to purchase Day Travelcards for their own use or for those accompanying and assisting them.

Buckinghamshire Council now awaits a response from the London Mayor's office regarding their concerns and request for the withdrawal of the proposal.
