A man has been sentenced to prison after driving without insurance and using a mobile phone in Buckinghamshire.

Sebastian Nicolae Pop, 29, of High Street, East Chesterton, Cambridge, was sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment and disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a further 18 months in a hearing at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Thursday July 20.

Pop pleaded guilty at the same hearing to one count each of driving whilst disqualified, using a moto vehicle on a road without insurance and using a mobile phone while driving a motor vehicle.

He was caught in action on Wednesday July 19 at about 7.45pm when police officers saw him drive along Station Road in Amersham while using a mobile phone.

When the officers pulled him over, he tried to give a false name.

However, his true identity was uncovered and he was taken to police custody, where he was reported for the driving offences.

Because of the seriousness of the offences, including his previous offending history, Pop was charged and remanded in custody to appear before court the following day for sentencing.

Investigating Officer PC George Ward of the Incident and Crime Response Team based at Amersham police station said: “This was another example of how proactive policing can yield positive results.

“Pop showed complete disregard for traffic laws and the safety of other motorists, at the time of this incident he also attempted to deceive officers with providing a false name. I am delighted that he has received a custodial sentence as a result”.

Pop was also ordered to pay court costs and a victim surcharge of £239.
