ILLEGAL parking in a High Wycombe road on Thursday has been described as “inconsiderate” and "dangerous" after a mum had to walk onto oncoming traffic to avoid it.

A BMW car was parked on the pavement near Tesco on the A40 London Road, High Wycombe, forcing Dominique Hathaway to walk onto the road with her four-month-old baby in a pushchair.

Buckinghamshire Council has urged drivers to be "mindful" of where they park following the ordeal.

Dominique said: "It angered me so much that someone had no consideration for others.

"That stretch of road is very fast flowing and the fact I had to have my back to oncoming traffic while pushing my 4-month-old in his pushchair, you’d hope people would use their common sense and not endanger people's lives when the Tesco car park 200ft ahead had spaces available."

It's not the first time the mum has had to walk onto the road due to cars blocking the pavement.

She said: "I have experienced this sort of situation before but on a quieter back road which isn’t as bad but still not acceptable."

Parking on pavements is illegal and according to the Highway Code, 'parking on pavements is already punishable if it causes an obstruction'.

Steven Broadbent, Cabinet member for Transport, said: “We sympathise with the residents facing this issue and would like to urge all drivers to be mindful, and to park only where it is legal and safe for all car users and pedestrians.

"We are only able to use our enforcement powers in areas where parking restrictions are in place and have active enforcement patrols operating daily across the county. Residents can let us know about parking problems, including dangerous parking, by contacting us.

"We would like to remind people that if you have an immediate problem with a blocked driveway, you should contact the police as this is considered an obstruction.”

In summary, Dominique hopes drivers will be more mindful when choosing a parking space.

"Just take a moment to think of others that need more space on the pavements.

"Endangering people’s lives so that you’re closer to your destination is not worth it," she said.
