Care home residents have enjoyed outdoor swimming at a newly refurbished pool.
Although swimming can be scary for people with dementia, the residents of Portobello Place started swimming lessons at Chesham Moor Gym and Swim pool.
One of the brave residents who got into the pool with staff was Sally, who used to swim 100 lengths a day before moving to the care home.
After her dementia diagnosis, Sally told her daughters she had forgotten how to swim and that she was embarrassed by it.
Portobello Place’s general manager Catherine Emekwuo said: “We are thrilled to say that outdoor swimming has been a great success amongst our residents.

"It is testament to our home’s commitment to making sure our guests are not just living well but they are thriving!
“Sally’s recent classes have filled her with happiness, as she was an avid swimmer before being diagnosed with dementia. It’s been great to see her gain back her confidence in the water and has encouraged other residents to get involved.
“As long as there is interest we will continue to hold swimming classes every week as we believe the effects to be hugely positive and beneficial for our residents.”
The staff at the luxury Chesham care home said they have noticed swimming has had a positive impact on residents’ mood as it can alleviate stress and anxiety.
Chesham Moor Gym and Swim pool re-opened to the public on March 17 after undergoing an extensive refurbishment.
