Residents in a Bucks town have launched a petition to install a speed limit and speed bumps on an 'unsafe' road in their neighbourhood.

Muryel Boulay created the petition on Change.org on June 25, sharing her concern about the 30mph speed limit in place along Wycombe Road in Marlow which she said is “too fast for a residential area with children, pets and elderly residents".

Adding: “We have witnessed numerous accidents and near-misses due to speeding drivers. My car got crashed into twice in two months despite it being safely and legally parked on the side of the road. I would hate for anybody to be caught in an accident.”

Muryel also cited research gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggesting that speeding is the cause of approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities and that speed bumps can reduce fast drivers by up to 15mph.

She said that alongside fellow residents she wanted to urge Buckinghamshire Council to act and put safety precautions in place along Wycombe Road “before another accident occurs”.

“We believe that slowing down the speed limit to 20mph and adding speed bumpers will make our road safer for everyone. This will encourage drivers to be more cautious and aware of their surroundings.

“Let’s work together to make Wycombe Road a safer place for all residents.”

Fellow Marlovians shared their support of the petition on the fundraising page, with Emma West writing: “I live on Wycombe Road and constantly jump because of the loud and fast traffic passing.

“I have cats and I’m in constant fear that they might get hurt, having lost three already. I don’t feel safe.”

Debbie Bunyan added: “I live on Wycombe Road, and not only have I witnessed these dangers, but my car was hit as I was attempting to get out. I could have been killed or maimed but luckily it was just my car that was damaged.”

Nada Irani also voiced her assent, writing: “I often see cars coming at high speeds down this road and particularly around areas where cars are parked.

“I would wholly support a reduction in the speed limit with the addition of speed bumps to manage drivers’ speeds.”

A countywide review of speed limits for all public roads in Buckinghamshire was last conducted in 2012 and the council has said they are not currently funding any speed limit changes.

Changes to speed limits can also be funded by a parish or town council, a community board or via independent sources such as a local business.
