If you’re looking for Indian food that’s as pleasing for the taste buds as it is easy on the eye, look no further than The Kokum.
Nestled in Little Chalfont’s Elizabeth Avenue on a peaceful residential road, The Kokum serves authentic Indian food from different regions of the vast country.
The friendly manager welcomed us inside the trendy looking little restaurant and guided us to our window table - perfect for a date night.
If I was visiting during a heatwave like recently, I’d try to sit outside under the covered terrace.
Although it was a weekend, I chose to drink tonic water, but the drinks menu also boasts wines, beers, spirits and juices.
However, I was soon convinced to try the delightful and summery ‘Kokum Temptation’ – a non-alcoholic mocktail infused with kokum fruit, tamarind and kaffir.
After poppadom and delicious homemade pickle, I got the first bite of my Rajkoti Ghugra, five handmade pasties stuffed with peas, grated coconut and freshly made coriander and mint chutney, served in a perfect Instagram-friendly arrangement.
The flavours worked well together while the consistency was perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.
Vegetarian starters cost from £8.50 upwards and non-vegetarian prices start from £9.95.
Then my main dish arrived – Malai Kofta.
It is grated Paneer dumplings with Kokum’s own malai gravy, costing £11.95. Out of habit, and my addiction to butter, I ordered butter naan with the already rich dish.

With hindsight, the better option would have been the lighter and perfectly baked Tandoori Roti, which I ended up stealing from my dining companion (luckily this wasn't our first date!)
The Roti really brought out the flavour of the satisfyingly smooth and warming dish topped with cheese and coriander.
Vegetarian mains start from £9.95, seafood from £14.95, lamb from £12.95 and all chicken dishes cost £11.95.
My dining companion had a lamb starter, followed by more lamb in the shape of Rajasthani Laal Maas.
Call me a bad vegetarian, but I had to try the sauce with butter, onions, tomatoes and special mathania chilies. It's an ideal choice if you like the heat of a spicier dish.
Vegan options are available on request, and you can ask the friendly staff about the spiciness which ranges from mild to medium and hot.
The restaurant is located only 10-minute walk away from the Chalfont and Latimer Tube and train station, but there is also parking at the front.
I dare to say The Kokum is one of the tastiest places to eat in Buckinghamshire right now!
