Bucks residents choose to stay inside on coronation day, with streets around the county empty and wet.

It was all go in London today as King Charles III was crowned the country's new monarch, but the same couldn't be said for the streets of Buckinghamshire.

Market vendors stuck to their guns and set up tents in towns including Marlow and High Wycombe, but according to Laurie Christie, 63, who runs an art stall on Wycombe high street, it was a very slow day for business.

"It's been really quiet. Usually we would have had a lot more people out on the high street.

"I had expected more people to be about on the coronation day but I suppose they're at home watching it on their TVs. Which is good - it is history!"

After the Party Like A King celebration in Higginson Park, Marlow, was cancelled, many residents chose either to stay in or head to their local pub to watch the Westminster Abbey ceremony.

While the streets of the town were quiet, it was a bustling atmosphere inside The Duke pub on Queens Road.

Steve Blake, 59, landlord of The Duke, said: "We are delighted to be hosting so many families and members of the community, especially as we have had to step in after the unfortunate cancellation of the events in the park."

Frances Ackland-Snow, 47, a local artist whose work is displayed in The Duke's installation space area, added that she and those she was watching the coronation with had found it to be an emotional experience.

"The music and the historic feeling of the ceremony just gets to you. It's really something to see."

Despite the lack of extravagant celebrations around Bucks today, there's a packed schedule of street parties and events planned for the remainder of the bank holiday weekend - which, you'll be happy to hear, is forecast for much nicer weather.
