MARLOW has been ranked among the top three coolest places to live in the UK, so we decided to head out and ask readers exactly what it is they love about the area.
A poll of 5,000 people across the country, carried out by health and wellbeing brand Naturecan, found that Marlow was the trendiest place to live in Bucks last week, with the Thames-side town also cracking the top three coolest places in the UK overall.
We spoke to people who live in the area to find out what exactly it is that puts Marlow up there with the crème de la crème of UK locations.
Mary, who has lived in the area since 2006, was full of praise for Marlow's high street and its community spirit.
She said: "Marlow just has everything - the atmosphere, the people, the shops. Everything is so convenient, especially for retired people like myself. There is so much to do, with some of the best restaurants in England, the University of the Third Age group, the National Trust nearby. Even though I live alone, I never feel lonely. There's always someone there and everyone is so helpful and kind."
Meanwhile, Alicia credited the influx of London-based companies in Marlow for boosting its cool factor.
Alicia said: "Ever since the pandemic, people have moved down from central London and a lot of companies and brands have moved down with them. We have a Gail's Bakery now in Marlow, and a Megan's restaurant. It's great because there are so many nice dog walking places but you can also get into London easily."
Rami, who has lived in Texas, US, and different areas of Europe, said he liked Marlow because of its quintessentially British atmosphere.
He said: "I live in High Wycombe but I come to hang out in Marlow. The main draw is the people. I've met so many people here and they're all so nice, they're very relaxed and friendly. It feels calmer and less stressed than Wycombe. Especially after coming from Texas, it feels very British here, in a good way."
Kim added: "A big part of what makes Marlow cool has to be the events, like Pub in the Park and the Christmas in the Park they did last year. It's just always a lovely atmosphere, everywhere is dog friendly and child friendly. It's definitely a good place to bring up children, but everyone, across generations, just seems happy here."
Zoe, who owns the flower shop Foxglove on Spittal Street, also praised the atmosphere of the town.
Zoe said: "There's a very relaxed vibe in Marlow. You have nice people and a good balance between independent places and big brand names. It feels laidback but still town-like, which is a great balance."
Sarah, who works at Susie Watson Designs on the high street, emphasised the role of independent shops in making the town an attractive place to live and visit.
She said: "With all the independent shops and the bigger brands in Marlow, you have the best of both worlds. We definitely have a strong loyal customer base but lots of people also come for a nice day out. You can do some shopping, have a bit lunch and walk along the river, which is especially nice when it's sunny. Who wouldn't want to visit?"
The town’s Mayor Richard Scott also praised Marlow’s active community and wealth of attractions.
He said: “It’s a great place to live with an excellent community spirit. Marlow offers a wide range of activities, right on the River Thames, which rightfully attract visitors, businesses and residents.”
