A local woman has praised the 'immensely positive' efforts of Marlow residents to host Ukrainian refugees in a national radio interview.

Rebecca Lewis phoned into LBC news radio and spoke to MP David Lammy about the role Marlow has played in housing Ukrainian refugees.

Speaking on the show on February 26, Rebecca said she had been impressed by the collective efforts of her hometown in stepping up after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February.

The Marlow Ukraine Collective, a volunteer group that came together after the invasion, has helped nearly 300 Ukrainian refugees find new homes in Marlow.

Rebecca, who has hosted a refugee family since 2022, said: “The town has made everybody so welcome. It’s been an immensely positive experience and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved.”

She added that she was impressed by the commitment of local business owners to supporting refugees and providing employment.

“The lady who is living with me, Maria, was a cashier in a bank when she was in Ukraine and now she’s a waitress in a pizza restaurant.

“It’s a bit of a leap for her but she enjoys it and everyone in the village is friendly to her.”

Rebecca also praised the Homes for Ukraine scheme currently in place under Buckinghamshire Council.

The scheme means that households willing to host Ukrainian refugees receive a monthly payment of £500 to help manage additional living costs.

Community Liaison Officer for the Marlow Ukraine Collective, Ali Leibowitz, said: “Hosts and guests have shared so many happy times despite such difficult beginnings.

“The whole town of Marlow has worked hard to help their guests find their feet in a strange country.”
