PERIOD HOMES are up for sale in the popular Buckinghamshire commuter town rich with history, including a Downton Abbey- style home.
Home buyers looking for a new place with unique character and a touch of history are spoiled with options when it comes to Amersham and the surrounding areas.
Amersham was once known as Agmodesham when it first appeared in AD 796 in Saxon writing.
Naturally, no properties remain from that time, but Old Amersham still retains a taste of what the market town was once like – coupled with modern comforts such as restaurants, independent boutiques and Tube connection to central London.
Here are quirky period homes in Old Amersham currently on the market.
Coach House Barn, High Street
The five-bedroom barn conversion known as Coach House Barn is looking for new owners for £1.25 million.
It was converted in the late 1980s, and now spans across two floors, including three bathrooms and two reception rooms.
Coach House Barn is located on a small private courtyard.
Details include original exposed beams throughout the house, and a vaulted living room with a brick fireplace and doors leading to the gardens.
Shardeloes, Missenden Road
An apartment in this 18th century mansion with views of the Misbourne Valley is straight out of hit TV shows Downton Abbey or Bridgerton.
The first-floor apartment for £750,000 guided price is part of the Grade I listed complex, which draws from Roman and Greek influences.
Shardeloes’ was once the country seat for the Lord of the Manor, and it has links to Stiff Leadbetter, Robert Adam, Humphrey Repton and Capability Brown.
The south-west facing windows of the luxury apartment overlook the Grade II listed garden, woodland and Chiltern Hills.
Later Shardeloes became a maternity ward, where more than 3,000 babies were born during the Second World War, including the English lyricist and author Sir Tim Rice.

The large conservatory leads on to the patio and south facing garden, with a separate office and studio space in the rear of the landscaped garden.
Downstairs also includes the living room, which boasts an original brick fireplace with a new log burner and exposed beams, and a separate dining room.
The Broadway
The two-bedroom flat is located on the first floor of a Grade II listed cottage in the heart of Old Amersham and less than a mile from Amersham train station.
The flat, which is on the market for £350,000, has a private entrance and an enclosed roof terrace facing south-west.
Believed to date back to the mid-16th century, the cottage has exposed timber beams and sloping ceilings.
The living room overlooks The Broadway and its boutiques.
