A Buckinghamshire campaigner against litter was named a Christmas hero.

Maxine “Max” Caswell from Marlow has won a ‘shining star’ award for spearheading a campaign encouraging businesses to keep the streets tidy.

As part of her mission for cleaner town, Marlow Wombles- member Maxine designed green heart stickers for businesses to display, committing them to keep the front of the premises clean and encouraging shoppers to do the same.

Following her proactive campaign, Maxine was one of only four winners selected by organisers Resin Bound Surfaces and Purple Wellies celebrating volunteers and groups across the UK.

Maxine’s friend Su Jones, who nominated her for the M&S luxury hamper, said: “Thank you for running the scheme and recognising Max’s contribution. Max also runs community art in the Arc cafe on Fridays once a month, leads our Wednesday art group and designs cards for sale to raise money for local charities. She truly deserves that hamper.”

The litter campaign got the support of the Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce, and it has reduced the amount of littler dropper in Marlow, the award organisers told.

It has now been adopted by businesses in Bourne End, Wooburn Green, Flackwell Heath and the Globe Business Park.

Resin Bound Surfaces and Purple Wellies  director Liam Richards said: “We wanted to give something back to the shining stars in our communities this Christmas, and decided to spread some festive cheer by asking for nominations for those who go the extra mile to make our communities a better place.

"We were overwhelmed by the response, and choosing the recipients was a tricky task as there were so many worthy winners."
