Wetherspoons have had their planning application to open a new pub in Marlow approved.

The proposal will see the M&Co store at 3 Market Square turned into the popular pub chain.

The original plans revealed the pub would be named The Brass Thimble but in a revised application the name has been changed to The Swan Hook.

Founded and owned by Tim Martin, Wetherspoons bought the site back in March for a rumoured £3.5 million fee.

Proposals suggest that the pub would create proximately 50 to 60 full and part-time jobs and “be beneficial to the vitality and viability of the town centre”.

The proposed opening hours are 7am to midnight from Sunday to Thursday and 7am to 1am Friday and Saturday.

A beer garden is also set to be placed at the back of the pub which would close at 11pm daily.

The kitchen would operate between 8am and 11pm daily.

There have been a number of objections submitted on the council planning portal.

Hugh Fickling wrote: "There is no need for an additional public house, especially one that promotes cheap

procurement of alcohol.

"The pub is part of a large chain, this will remove revenue from locally owned businesses.

"The high street has seen a huge proportion of local businesses disappear in recent years."

Lynne Nicoll added: "The proposed opening hours would significantly impact on our ability to enjoy our home where

we have lived happily for 25 years.

"It will inevitably impact on our sleep and quality of life, leading to the detriment of our wellbeing.

"A closing time of The Coach Marlow, on the opposite side of West Street, which is considered a great British pub closes at 11pm."

However, some have shared their excitement on Facebook.

Jenny Walker wrote: "Fantastic, so very welcome brilliant not all of us can afford the expensive restaurants. Our money doesn’t go that far."

The planning application shows a first-floor extension with the basic floor plan being retained with a bar being installed in a central spot within the building.

In the area currently occupied by parking spaces, a new external terraced seating area will be formed with a small covered pergola in the beer garden.

The existing mezzanine level will be utilised to provide staff facilities and a kitchen storage area.

A new first-floor area will be formed towards the front part of the building on top of the existing flat roof area to provide customer toilets, a plant area and a boiler room.

Under that plans, the existing first floor part of the building occupied by GMTW Architects will remain unaffected.
