The licence of a popular village pub has been reviewed following complaints from neighbours about noise from punters.

The Grays Inn, The Green, Wooburn Green, was the subject of the licensing panel hearing by Buckinghamshire Council on Wednesday, November 2.

The review was ordered on the grounds of ‘prevention of public nuisance’ from ‘noise from regulated entertainment'.

The 18th century pub sits next to a row of houses.

It currently holds an alcohol sale licence until midnight Monday to Thursday and 1am Friday to Saturday and 10.30 on Sundays.

A panel of councillors reviewed evidence, including the application for a review of the licence from Tim Blewett.

It read: "It has been a hard time for pubs and restaurants with the recent pandemic, so a certain amount of understanding and leniency has been observed. Unfortunately, there are issues which must be raised.

"For three consecutive weeks now, there has been unacceptable late-night noise and behaviour. Loud groups singing of several songs such as “Country Roads”. This started in the back garden moving to the side of the pub. Three meters my property along with foul aggressive language and shouting.

"This not only filled my house at such a late time but woke my sleeping children that until now have never been woken from the pub activities."

Mr Blewett provided a diary log of several alleged noise incidents with times and dates throughout the summer of 2021. Brian Whittall from the council's licencing team was made aware at the time. 

His letter added: "I have been a resident next to the pub for over eight years and this is the first time I have had to make such a complaint. This can't be a regular theme of weekly sing song in the late hours. I know of very few other venues in Bucks and Berks that this acceptable at this time of night." 

The application sought noise from regulated entertainment in outdoor areas to be kept to background level, at all times with doors and windows to be kept closed during regulated entertainment.

Clear notices have to be provided to remind patrons to leave in a quiet and orderly manner.

Following the licensing review, the pub will now have to limit events where regulated entertainment occurs in the external area of the premises (which shall include live music and/or recorded music) to two events per calendar month.

Events are to be held on either on a Friday or Saturday night only and will end at 11pm.

Regulated entertainment (which shall include live music and/or recorded music) is only permitted inside the pub between the following times: Monday to Thursday 11am to 11pm, Friday to Saturday 11am to 1pm, Sunday 11am to 10.30pm.
