TEN strories reflecting the diverse cultural and natural heritage of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty have been published.
The tales have been Commissioned by the Chalk, Cherries and Chairs Landscape Partnership scheme to provide new ways for people living and working in the area to appreciate the value of the landscape all around them.
The Chilterns Stories collection includes Fantastic Mr Fox, which was inspired by the wildlife and farmlands around Roald Dahl’s home in Great Missenden and The Grim’s Ditch Mysteries by expert archaeologist Dr. Wendy Morrison, which will introduce readers to the importance of Buckinghamshire’s largest scheduled monument.
Other books include, Red which will provide a bird’s eye view of the successful reintroduction of Red Kites to the area, Riverbank Tales will explain the repopulation of rare fauna in our precious chalk streams.
A story about the furniture industry is being told in Sit Down Here and Something About This Place will gather a collection of the winning entries from local schools short essay writing competition.
Project Manager of Chalk, Cherries and Chairs Lachlan Stuart said: “Building on the success of our Chilterns Landscapes art exhibition earlier in the year, Chilterns Stories is an exciting development which will showcase The Chilterns through the lens of literature, exploring people’s sense of place, home, history and heritage.
"There are stories for all ages and we are excited that the book collection will form part of Chalk, Cherries and Chairs’ legacy for future generations.”
