Ricky Gervais’ hit TV series After Life celebrated a big win at National Television Awards last night.

Each year the star-studded awards dubbed ‘televisions’ biggest night of the year’ gives audiences a chance to vote their favourites TV entertainment and talent.

After Life, the funny and perceptive Netflix comedy starring Gervais as a local reporter Tony coming to terms with the death of his wife, became an audience favourite, earning it three seasons and industry recognition since it first aired in 2019.

The comedian, also known for creating other hit series like The Office and Extras, posted on Twitter: “Thank you #NTAs & to everyone who voted. Best fans in the world. Oh, and thanks to Jack the sniffer dog for the selfie”

Written and directed by Reading- born Gervais, the series went on to win best comedy award last night at London’s OVO Wembley Arena– a second such win for the dark yet sympathetic comedy series filmed on locations in Buckinghamshire.

During filming of After Life in 2021, film crews were spotted in the grounds of St Mary’s and All Saints Church in Beaconsfield and outside Beaconsfield Old Town Registration Office on Windsor End, used as set for the Autumnal Leaves Care Home, where Tony’s father lives.

Mr Gervais was also spotted filming the series at the historical Royal Standard of England pub in Forty Green.

Following the big win, Gervais, who owns a home in Marlow, delighted his more than 15 million Twitter followers with a smiling selfie as he posed with award again, captioned “It’s going on the shelf!”

Currently After Life is rated 8.4 out of 10 on movie and TV database IMDB and it was named Netflix’s list of most popular series.

Victorious Mr Gervais was pictured posing playfully on the red carpet with fellow After Life stars Tony Way, Jo Hartley, Diane Morgan and Tom Basden at the television awards night, which also saw This Morning’s Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby take home the best daytime award despite criticism following claims they skipped the queue for the Queen’s lying in state.

Ricky Gervais told PA news agency previously: “I said to Netflix, ‘I’ll do one if the second series goes down a storm’, and I kept to that.

“I fell in love with this. And, secretly, for the first time ever, I did want to do a third, and I’m gutted that I’m not doing a fourth, really.

“But it’s the right decision."

Other awards included best talent show prize win by Strictly Come Dancing, Peaky Blinders as the best returning drama, while Ant and Dec took home the best TV presenter award.
