SWIMMERS and gym-users in Princes Risborough can work on their carbon footprint as they work out in new eco-friendly facilities.

A state-of-the-art eco-cooling system was installed in Risborough Springs Swim and Fitness Centre at Wades Park in Stratton Road.

The centre has put in an evaporative cooling system - with the hope of saving 10,000kg of carbon a year more compared to a typical air conditioning system and more than £2,000 in costs.

Duncan Boxford-White, group engineering and technical manager for Nexus, said the system works by bringing in fresh air and filtering it. He said: "Even if the temperature outside is 30 degrees, to the user of the gym it feels below 20."

The new system will also reduce humidity, he said. "It should be a healthier environment for people to exercise in," he added.

Higher energy costs, increased carbon awareness and improved technology have led to the increased use of eco-coolers in offices, shops, schools, leisure centres and hospitals.
