BUCKS New University has been told to go back to the drawing board after councillors objected to its latest development.
The university was hoping its proposals to build a 672-room student village on the former Compair factory site in Hughenden Avenue, High Wycombe, would be passed tonight.
Council officers recommended the plans be given the go-ahead with certain conditions.
But members of Wycombe District Council's development control committee had so many concerns about the building's design and potential transport problems the plans threw up, they deferred them to a later meeting.
The university and council officers will now reasses the plans to address members concerns.
Councillor Jeanette Mann (Con, Disraeli) said although she supported development of the disused factory site, she was not happy with the design of the suggested buildings and the proposal not to include any parking space for students within the development.
"Car parking is a worry for the residents," she said. "Thesedays all students have a car or friends with one."
She added: "We would like to see the development proceed and the space be utilised but we need to ensure this is not at the cost of impinging on the privacy of existing residents."
Her comments were echoed by committee members who agreed an independent body should look at the plans before they made the final decision.
They also said the parking and design elements needed to be discussed thoroughly again. Around 40 residents objected to the original plan to build a nine-storey high block with 936 rooms.
The university responded to their objections by slashing the number of rooms and chopping two storeys off the highest block.
