SPEEN residents are calling on councillors to allow alterations to a Grade II listed building to save their traditional village pub.

Three years since the King William IV pub in Hampden Road was sold and converted into De Wanium Indian restaurant, it looks set to return to its former glory.

An offer to buy the property has been made and accepted and a planning application has been submitted to Wycombe District Council to refurbish and add an extension.

Residents saddened at the loss of their traditional village meeting place formed an action group and campaigned to find a new landlord amid fears the pub would be sold to a developer and converted into a residence.

John Holmes, on of the leaders of the campaign, said: "We launched our own search but it proved difficult. We were delighted to hear someone has come forward and their offer has been accepted by the restaurant owners because we hear he plans to run it as a traditional village pub.

"It's a Grade II listed building and it requires some work to make suitable. Villagers are keen to support these plans.

"People have enjoyed going to the restaurant but it's not the same as a village pub and not everyone likes Indian food."

A decision on the planning application is due to be made next month.
