ONE hundred politicians have thrown their weight behind a petition calling on the Government to scrap plans to expand Heathrow Airport.

Three of the signatures came from members of South Bucks District Council, who joined forces with MP's, MEP's, members of the Greater London Authority, councillors and prospective parliamentary candidates.

Councillors Ken Brown (independent, Beaconsfield West), Sabeeha Khan (Cons, Gerrards Cross North) and George Sandy (Cons, Taplow) all joined the protest.

The Government plans currently involve the construction of a third runway and sixth terminal, to be built by 2020.

The petition was circulated in the 12 boroughs though to be most affected by these plans, and will be presented to the Prime Minister later this month.

John Stewart, chairman of the Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise (HACAN), said: "In the few weeks that it was circulating 100 people signed the petition. It is another nail in the coffin of Heathrow expansion. It is time the Government stopped trying to bulldoze through its unpopular plans."

HACAN will also be staging a rally at Westminster on February 25, to mark the end of the consultation period for the Heathrow expansion plans.
