CADMORE End residents will go for a final push to raise funds for a new lifeboat tonight, in memory of a fellow villager who died while surfing.
The community have organised a 'Vaguely Valentines' dinner at the village hall for 21-year-old James Stott, who died after suffering an epileptic fit at Watergate Bay in Newquay in 2006.
One of James's brothers, Jonathan, 27, decided that supporting the RNLI raise £10,000 for a new lifeboat would be a fitting memorial.
He said: "It has been a community driven project. They see it as a way of getting together and doing something proactive. It's gone from a personal tradegy to something that's grown and expanded to something I never thought it would be."
An RNLI lifeguard team came to the aid of James and attempted to resuscitate him on the beach. He died four days later in hospital after never regaining consciousness.
The event, which is sold out, will also feature a raffle with tickets for Prime Minister's Question Time, donated by Paul Goodman MP, and a range of jewellery, wine, chocolates and other luxury gifts donated by people who had heard about the appeal.
The family hope to have the lifeboat in time to launch it on what would have been James's 23rd birthday in August this year.
