FAULTY parking machines forced motorists to move their cars or face a fine this weekend.

Machines in the Swan car park in High Wycombe were not allowing drivers to pay for parking past 6pm as they were spitting out coins.

Bucks Free Press editor Steve Cohen was one such motorist who was driven round the bend by the problematic machines.

Eventually he ended up parking in three different places so he could go for an early dinner on Sunday night.

Parking on a Sunday in the Swan and outside the council offices costs £1.50 after 6pm and £1 up until then.

When the enigmatic editor tried to park at 5.35pm outside the council he decided to move into the Swan where he thought it would be cheaper.

But as he had parked at 5.45pm signs in the Swan told him he would have to cough up £2.50 to park all night.

However, when he tried to pay the extra £1.50 needed to park after 6pm the machine refused his money.

WDC said there was an error with the machines on Sunday night and it would be putting it right "straight away".

Joanne Mass, WDC spokesman, added: "Having checked the parking machine and systems, we have found that there was a specific programming error for the car parks at the Swan and the front of the council offices at the time you visited."

Joanne said there had not been any other reports of the faulty machines and said no parking tickets were issued on Sunday night while they were playing up.
