A SCOUT group may have to cancel planned activities unless they can find someone to help out.

The Wooburn Green Scout Club, which has been running for 98 years, is appealing for an assistant to step in and help run and supervise their activities.

Without a regular assistant, parents have been stepping in to help Scout leader Neil Axtell - and although he is grateful for their help, he is keen to appoint someone to the post full-time.

Mr Axtell said: "At the moment it's just myself and an assistant Scout leader, but she is also the Cub leader and she can't do both any longer.

"If I can't make it for any reason there's a chance we would have to cancel some of our activities."

He admitted it was a problem across the Scout Association, with demand outweighing the number of people prepared to help out.

"We want to be able to provide more activities for young people but the amount we can supply is very stretched by the number of people prepared to volunteer," added Mr Axtell.

Anyone who can provide assistance to the 21 scouts and 18 cubs should contact Mr Axtell on 07904 101568.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring Beaver colony attached to the Bourne End Scout Group are also still looking for an assistant after a previous supervisor left at the end of December.

The group cannot take any more new members despite some youngsters moving up to join older children in the Cubs and Scouts.

Assistant Scout leader Roy Harris said: "The Beaver colony is choc-a-bloc at the moment and it's very disappointing that we are still looking for someone."

Anyone interested in becoming a Beaver leader should contact Mr Harris on 01628 526805.
