YOUNG male drivers are being urged to take special care of their female passengers whilst out in their cars.

With Valentines Day just around the corner, the message is being put out for young couples to be extra responsible when they are out driving.

This year a campaign called "For My Girlfriend" - run by Bucks County Council, Bucks Fire and Rescue and the British Red Cross - will highlight the dangers with two sixth-formers acting as car crash victims in a mocked-up accident.

Fellow pupils at Princes Risborough School will watch them rescued from the "crash" scene using hydraulic cutting equipment to ram home the message.

Keith Wheeler, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service's road safety manager, said: "The campaign brings home graphically the potentially terrible consequences for drivers and passengers when things go wrong.

"At this romantic time of year we are taking the opportunity to ask young male drivers to take special care of their female passengers."

Statistics show more young females killed or seriously injured in car accidents are passengers rather than drivers.
