WHAT began as a simple homework assignment turned into a visit to the Bucks Free Press offices for 12-year-old Abigail Griffin.

Abigail, a pupil at Beaconsfield Secondary School, was given the special assignment last September.

She and her schoolmates took part in a competition to design a logo for Beaconsfield's Neighbourhood Action Group.

The contest aimed to get young people more involved in neighbourhood policing.

The group received more than 50 entries, but Abigail's stood out above the rest.

She won the chance to visit the Bucks Free Press offices with her family, who live in Wooburn Manor Park, Wooburn Green, and help create a mocked up front page of the newspaper.

Emma Griffin, 38, Abigail's mother, said: "It was a good entry but we were surprised that she won, and also what she won. They said they liked it because it was simple and to the point."

Mark Rawlings, 43, Abigail's father, said: "I was proud and surprised, because she wasn't too worried about the competition. I'm pleased for her though, she obviously did what the judges were looking for."

Abigail also won £100 in gift tokens and a computer security system for the school.
