AMERSHAM residents are being encouraged to get behind this year's entry to Britain in Bloom.

Last year the town won a silver award in the south east regional finals in what was their first-ever entry, and this time they are looking to go one better.

The town council are now looking for groups and residents to prepare for the 2008 event and are hoping to do better this time round as there is more time to prepare.

Amersham's town clerk, Des Knowles, said: "Last year we only had eight weeks' notice so the town council did it all. Administration is becoming more urgent and we don't want to have a last-minute panic.

"We were delighted and surprised to get a silver award but the one observation the judges made was there was not much community and schools involvement.

"That was a bit difficult to sort out within eight weeks so they would expect us to have that sorted this year if we are going to match last year's effort."

Judging is not due to take place until July, but the council is looking to hold a number of competitions of their own, such as for the best window box and hanging basket, in preparation for the main Britain in Bloom event.

Mr Knowles added: "We want community organisations behind it, that's the important thing. We need to start thinking about it now."
