Two village locations are being suggested for a new skate park – after hundreds of residents signed a petition to get one back amid a spate of anti-social behaviour.
Nearly 300 Flackwell Heath residents backed a petition in September last year calling for a skate park to return to the area, years after the previous one was demolished, saying there was not enough to keep young people safe and off the streets.
Since then, a skate park feasibility study group, made up of councillors from Flackwell Heath and Wooburn and Bourne End, has been looking at making a skate park a reality for young people in the area.
A number of locations have been suggested, including the Holtspur picnic site and the field at the end of Mayfield Road/Wooburn Mead in Wooburn Green.
But the two possible locations that are looking the most promising are the field on Green Dragon Lane in Flackwell Heath or the fields on Town Lane in Wooburn.
The skate park group said a response from one of the owners of the Town Lane fields was “encouraging”, with discussions ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Green Dragon Lane site was raised as a possibility at an informal Chepping Wycombe Parish Council meeting and the clerk contacted the agent who was “quite positive” about the idea but needed more information.
Councillors think the Green Dragon Lane site would be “ideal” because the field has a natural dip, but the whole site is much larger than would be needed for a skate park, so there are questions about what might happen with the rest of the field.
The Holtspur picnic site, which is halfway between Holtspur and Wooburn Green along the B4440 Wooburn Green Lane, is available for hire so could be a possibility for a skate park – although there are concerns that the site is not on any public transport routes from Flackwell Heath, Bourne End or Wooburn.
The field at the end of Mayfield Road in Wooburn Green is possibly too close to housing to be successful.
While all sites suggested have been put forward to the skate park designers for them to consider which one is most suitable, the Town Lane field and the Green Dragon Lane field have been mooted as the best places because they are bigger and offer more possibility for expansion.
Councillors, residents and police have been working together to try and tackle a surge in anti-social behaviour in the area, particularly in Flackwell Heath.
The village has been blighted by bad behaviour, including attacking a shop owner with water guns, racist graffiti, damaging play equipment and plants and setting fires in the park.
The village used to have a skate park at the recreation ground in Straight Bit but bulldozers moved in to demolish it in March 2013 despite residents fighting to save it.
At the time, Chepping Wycombe Parish Council said the ramps were too close to houses and did not meet relevant noise guidelines.
Mark Davis, who set up the petition, wrote at the time: "The last skate park was demolished and there is nowhere local for the kids to go and skate and be safe and off the streets.”
