DRIVERS were fuming when they were stuck at Handy Cross Roundabout for around an hour-and-a-half yesterday .

But the Highways Agency said the delays were not caused by roadworks and it was purely down to heavy traffic.

Driver Maria Hughes, who was on her way to her mother's home in Sands, described the situation as a nightmare.' The bookkeeper from Maidenhead had dropped her husband off at Maidenhead Train Station at 8.55am before she became gridlocked just after the Marlow turnoff on the A404.

Mrs Hughes said: "An hour-and-a-half is ridiculous. I was sat there for 20 minutes without moving. When I got to the top of the road, trucks and cars were in the way and you could not get off the roundabout. It is just a nightmare.

"I work from home so its not so bad but other people stand no chance."

She added she had been stuck in traffic at the roundabout more than ten times in the last few weeks.

Handy Cross Roundabout has been a problem area for months.

The sequencing of the traffic lights has been causing delays.

Drivers have not been helping the situation by jumping lights, say the Highways Agency.

Clair Thomas, spokesman for Highways Agency, said it was not carrying out any work and it was simply due to congestion.

She said: "There was no specific incident at Handy Cross. It seems to be just the weight of traffic using the roundabout."
