AN UNDER THIRTEENS rugby club were inspired on to victory today, wearing socks printed with initials of a lost teammate.
Marlow Rugby Club's junior team overcame its opposition whilst dressed in distinctive socks modelled on those worn by Harry Mills. Harry was a dedicated player who died of meningitis last April at the age of 11.
After the match, a presentation was given in the club building. More than a hundred family, friends and players packed the club house as a plaque was unveiled to Harry's memory, complete with photographs and a pair of the black and white hooped socks emblazoned with the initials HM.
Harry's dad Richard gave a speech afterwards, in which he said: "Marlow Rugby Club gave so much to Harry as a player. He loved rugby and made so many friends, as have we.
"It is a great tribute to Harry's sportsmanship for this plaque to be placed in the club.
"It is also a great tribute to Marlow Rugby Club, the coaches and Harry's teammates to take the time, care and effort to remember him in this way.
"I hope that the socks bring the team luck and that Harry's spirit stays with the team."
Members of the public can buy a pair of the socks, and the money raised will be put towards the Meningitis Research Foundation and the Youth Sport Trust.
