A huge fireball was seen in the skies over England last night, with hundreds of people reporting "spectacular" meteor sightings.

The "green-blue" meteor was spotted by people all over England, including in London, Reading, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Cambridge and beyond.

The UK Meteor Observation Network said they had received dozens of reports after the sightings, at around 9.45pm on May 16, but that they only caught one photo of it on their network of cameras.

Ian Dunn said on Twitter: "Saw it in Aylesbury. Green/blue fireball breaking up."

Susie Gander said: "Saw it in High Wycombe too."

Another added: "I was getting a delivery from Tesco's and the driver spotted it above my house whilst I was unloading the shopping. Gutted I missed it. In between Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard."

Andy Horn said: "Saw it in over Aylesbury, Bucks, around 21:45. It lasted 4/5 seconds and burnt green before it broke apart. Biggest I’ve seen. I was facing about 307 degrees NW and it came across left to right."

NASA says a meteoroid is a "space rock" that enters the Earth's atmosphere at high speed and burns up.

When meteoroids survive the trip through the atmosphere and hit the ground, then it is called a meteorite.
