RESIDENTS have said what they would like to see built in their town instead of a new Aldi and McDonald’s.

People in Bucks responded to the question of what they would prefer over a new supermarket and fast-food restaurant off Crest Road in High Wycombe – with some interesting suggestions.

Plans for a new 1,801 sqm Aldi supermarket and a 517 sqm McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru at the former Park and Ride site will soon be back before Bucks Council.

It recently withdrew from a planning meeting an application by Aldi Stores Limited after late public responses forced “further consideration”.

So, we asked the public what they thought of the scheme and what else would be acceptable.

Dozens of people replied, some saying the Aldi-McDonald’s scheme is unwanted; other saying it is welcome.

While some wanted more entertainment, like an ice-skating rink, Laser Quest, crazy golf, indoor go-carting, and even an escape room, or nightclub.

Others still suggested a leisure centre, a waterpark, and a racetrack or 4×4 experience.

Some people suggested other big shops besides Aldi, like Costco, Farm Foods, The Range, Smyths Toys, and B&M.

Plans for a Costco off Crest Road fell through in 2018 despite backing from the then-Wycombe District Council and after the shopping giant bought the land in 2015.

Resident Zoe Goldsmith suggested a new IKEA.

Louis Hales, Burger King.

Carl Rogers even suggested, “a new town”.

Local Deborah Stenner demanded a driving test centre, after landlords at Cliveden Office Village in Lancaster Road served notice to High Wycombe’s driving test centre, home of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), prompting local outrage.

Kelly Jerrome suggested instead a new nature reserve, and Cressex Road local Charlotte Bird agreed, saying more wildlife would be welcome.

When asked why the application was withdraw from the meeting, a council spokesman said: “The application was withdrawn from the agenda at the committee meeting as we received some very late representations which require further consideration before proposals can be discussed.”

Adding, however: “It still remains a live application and will be taken back to committee at a later date.”
