PLANS for a new Aldi and McDonald’s that were due to be discussed this week have been postponed after late public responses forced “further consideration”.

Bucks Council withdrew from a planning meeting on Tuesday an application by Aldi Stores Limited for a new discount supermarket and fast-food restaurant off Crest Road in High Wycombe.

When asked why, a council spokesman said: “The application was withdrawn from the agenda at the committee meeting as we received some very late representations which require further consideration before proposals can be discussed.”

Adding, however: “It still remains a live application and will be taken back to committee at a later date.”

The application seeks construction of a 1,801 sqm Aldi supermarket and a 517 sqm McDonald’s restaurant and drive-thru, with a new access from Crest Road and 126 parking spaces, on a vacant plot measuring approximately one hectare (currently owned by Bucks Council).

A new pedestrian crossing on John Hall Way is also planned.

Plans for an Aldi and drive-thru McDonald’s at the former Park and Ride site were first revealed by the former Wycombe District Council (WDC) in March 2019.

And, since then, the new traffic light-controlled junction at Crest Road and John Hall Way has also opened in place of the mini roundabout, to some controversy.

Cressex Road local Charlotte Bird said traffic is worse since the lights went up – and that more fast-food restaurants in the area will just encourage unhealthy eating.

She called the proposals “monstrosities” and suggested instead a play centre or laser tag, adding more green spaces are also needed.

“I live very close to it and the traffic has been made worse by the installation of those waste of electricity traffic lights, and with what they are going to sadly and very unnecessarily build, the traffic is going to get worse,” said Charlotte.

“I work on the industrial estate and live on Cressex Road, so I am often going to ASDA to pick up shopping. My boyfriend works at John Lewis and commutes daily from Maidenhead.

“As far as I am aware, we have not had any consultation on those monstrosities. We need areas of greenery for wildlife.

“They could instead build a play centre there, have a soft play area for young kids and maybe a laser tag or something similar for teens and adults. We really do not need any more fast-food joints around as it promotes unhealthy eating.”
