The notorious Beaconsfield A355 relief road opened today for traffic after years of delays, earning it the nickname “road to nowhere”.
The much-anticipated relief road was built to help congestion on the busy London Road A40 section along Wilton Park.
Buckinghamshire Council completed its responsibility of construction on November 7 2019 – the northern part of the relief road stretching through fields along the Beaconsfield Golf Club from Maxwell Road to Minerva Way junction.

The housing developer Inland Homes oversaw the construction from Minerva Way to Pyebush Roundabout.
Inland Homes CEO Stephen Wicks said in 2020 that they had to demolish £10 million worth of “perfectly good houses” to build the road through Wilton Park, but house sales were needed first to afford the demolition.
The road to nowhere is now a road to somewhere! It will be open to traffic from 1pm I’m told. Very happy this will take traffic away from London End. Thank-you to all involved in bringing it to completion. pic.twitter.com/3s86jewvtV

The road opened reportedly at 1pm on April 5, and Bucks Council said the pelican crossing was turned on in time for the road opening.
