Parts of Wycombe and nearby areas including Loudwater, Flackwell Heath and Penn were affected by power cuts this afternoon.

The electricity supply in the HP10 and HP11 postcodes shut off at around 1pm on Monday afternoon, and in many of these areas the power remains off.

The power supplier for the area, SSE, has advised that it is aware of the unplanned power shortages and it is working hard to get the lights back on.

The bad news? It is unlikely that power will be restored today (Monday).

On its website, SSE has warned those affected that it does not expect the power to be restored until 11pm on Tuesday night.

This could have a big impact on businesses in the area, with many forced to close their doors on Monday with no available electricity.

The power cut also brings potential safety concerns in the area, with traffic lights on a section of the A40 London Road and other streets in the area no longer working due to the lack of electricity.

It remains to be seen if SSE is able to restore power ahead of schedule - with some residents in the area reporting that their electricity was brought back online after only a few hours this afternoon.

At the moment, though, it seems that the majority of those affected could be in it for the long haul.

What should you do during a power cut?

  • Switch off and unplug appliances, especially ones that can get hot like a fire or hair straighteners, in case the power comes on when you are not expecting it.
  • Try not to open your fridge or freezer to keep the cold in.
  • Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to make sure they are ok.
  • Be careful while outside at night as street lights might not be on.
  • Turn your appliances back on one at a time when power does return
