An ambulance crew member was left injured in the road after a man he tried to help in Farnham Common deliberately drove at him - sending him flying over the bonnet.

Ajil Khawaja was seen driving "erratically" on the A355 Beaconsfield Road on January 3 this year and it turned out he was drink-driving.

Concerned by his driving, an ambulance crew tried to stop the drink-driver but when one of the technician's approached the car, Khawaja purposefully drove at him, sending him flying up the bonnet and windscreen.

The man, in his forties, was left laying in the road, but fortunately he escaped with minor bumps and bruises.

Khawaja, 34, of Albert Drive in Woking, was last week jailed for 16 months and banned from the road for 44 months at Guildford Crown Court.

He had pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm, dangerous driving, drink driving, driving otherwise in accordance with a license, and driving without insurance.

Investigating officer, PC Richard Lunn of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “This is a horrible incident where a member of ambulance staff, who just wanted to help, was struck by a vehicle and left on the side of the road.

“Thankfully the technician involved was not seriously hurt and was back on duty in a matter of days.

“Khawaja quite clearly was not fit to be driving and put others at great risk, and deliberately drove at a paramedic.

“I am pleased that he will not be in a position to drive for some time.

“Thames Valley Police’s Roads Policing Unit is dedicated to removing people like Khawaja from our roads.”
