Wycombe’s MP commented on the Prime Minister’s situation while he visited a skills hub for people with learning disabilities on Friday.
While No 10 Downing Street is battling crisis left, right and centre, Steve Baker MP talked about any plans for the Prime Minister’s position and Boris Johnson’s situation during a volatile time for the incumbent PM.
“It’s very honouring that people are asking me about this job”, Mr Baker replied when asked about his plans for the nation’s top job.
“But it’s not very realistic to believe that any backbench MP will be catapulted by Conservative MPs past every Minister and every member of the Cabinet.
“But I’m honoured people are asking me. It’s not a plausible proposition and I do not anticipate standing there."
He declined to answer who his preferred option for Prime Minister was.

“That’s a question I’m not answering at all. There is no vacancy just now.
“In the previous leadership contest, I backed candidates very early and I’m not going to do that this time I don’t suppose.
“But it’s still my view it does look like it’s over for Boris and my main focus at the moment is, honestly, privately and indeed now publicly, encouraging colleagues to behave in a professional way."
While he encouraged Conservative colleagues to behave, he said all the eyes were on the party and its ability to provide a good government.
“I’m very clear that should be all of our top priority because the British people have been through so much.
“My inbox is absolutely filled up with people telling me about the apparent hypocrisy of the rule-makers not obeying their own rules. I agree with them.
“We now have to do better. It’s an important moment for all politicians of all parties but especially my own party."
Mr Baker wasn't suprised at the lack of trust towards the Prime Minister by Labour's Keir Starmer and said: “I’m in a position where I’ve got a long history with Boris and I’m trying my best to not comment at all.

“The readers of the Bucks Free Press will know that I was closely involved with the events around Theresa May’s premiership and for that reason I don’t want to comment. It will just create more problems than it solves.
“Part of trying to have a professional process is not giving a running commentary on issues like trust.
“He is the Prime Minister. If he can save himself that’s great but I don’t think that seems very likely.”
