Wycombe Wanderers lost for only the third time at home this league season, after they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Milton Keynes in a match that was overshadowed by discriminatory chanting by some of the away fans.

In the first meeting between the two sides at Adams Park since August 2019, the away side nearly took the lead inside the first 20 seconds of the contest.

After Curtis Thompson was disposed in the centre of the park, the away side went onto the counter-attack but Tennai Watson’s cross was easily gathered by David Stockdale.

Wanderers struggled to get a foothold in the game as the side from North Bucks continued to pass the ball around with class, and after already showing the Adams Park outfit what they were capable of on the counter, it was another breakaway that led to their goal.

On 13 minutes, Theo Corbeanu won the ball in the midfield and ran towards the Wanderers box.

After evading Joe Jacobson, he fired a somewhat innocuous shot towards goal inside the penalty area that seemed to be bread and butter for Stockdale to save.

However, the shot was too hot for the keeper to handle and after he spilt the effort, Twine was on hand to fire in the rebound from close range to give the vistors the lead.

It was his 13th goal of the season.

Wycombe rarely threatened with Brandon Hanlan’s attempted lob being pushed away by Jamie Cumming, being their only real chance of the first half, before the match was paused due to another unsavoury incident at Adams Park this month.

Throughout the opening period, the away fans were heard singing defamatory and slanderous chants towards Wycombe striker, Adebayo Akinfenwa.

After Gareth Ainsworth alerted the fans to stop with their chant, the supporters continued before the legendary forward decided to leave the substitutes bench and confront the 1,400 MK followers.

He pleaded, they refused and tannoy announcements were made to stop the chant, but sadly, they continued throughout the opening period, and into the second half.

This led to the game being briefly paused.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, Wanderers’ medical team were seen rushing over to the terrace end following health scare amongst the Wycombe fans.

Thankfully, a source close to the BFP who was in the end at the time, described the incident as ‘nothing too dramatic’.

Wycombe later confirmed that ‘a young supporter who fell momentarily ill in the terrace in the first-half is feeling okay and being looked after in the First Aid room’, when the second half began.

The hosts stepped up their game but throughout the contest, Jamie Cumming was rarely tested in the opposition goal.

The most notable attempt of the second period saw Corbeanu’s header get tipped onto the bar from Stockdale in what was an amazing save.

However, the match was overshadowed due to the disgraceful chanting from the away end.

Wycombe fall to fifth place in the table, four points off top spot.
