Food bin collections to resume in High Wycombe and Amersham

Residents in High Wycombe and Amersham will be able to have their food waste collected again, from December 13.

The announcement was made by Cllr Peter Strachan, cabinet member for climate change and environment, during a full council meeting this week.

It was met by applause by other members.

Residents in Chiltern and Wycombe have been asked to throw away food waste with their general household rubbish since mid-August.

This is due to a national shortage of HGV drivers and a small number of Covid-19 related cases, including crew being required to self-isolate.

“I am pleased to be able to announce to members this evening, that with effect from December 13, separate food collections will resume in High Wycombe and Amersham,” said Cllr Strachan.

“We worked very hard with our refuse contractor Veolia to achieve this position, and by a combination of good recruiting practices – and also, Veolia employing people with a lesser HGV driving licence to drive the food wagons. This has expanded the contractor’s flexibility and capability.”

He added: “I do apologise to residents who have had to endure the reduced service, and I’m sure this announcement will be welcomed by both members, but also, of course, by residents.”
