A former High Wycombe Grammar School pupil will face trial next autumn accused of being a member of Isis.

The then Royal Grammar School student allegedly joined Isis after vanishing while on a family holiday as a teenager more than seven years ago.

Shabazz Suleman, 25, was arrested at Heathrow airport on September 29 and was charged over his alleged activities in Syria dating back to 2014.

Suleman went missing on a family holiday in Turkey - after completing A-Levels in Economics, Psychology and History with the RGS headteacher at the time Roy Page describing him as “very engaging and amiable”.

He is accused of preparing acts of terrorism by travelling from the UK to Turkey in order to join IS in August 2014.

He is also charged with belonging to IS, a proscribed organisation, between 2014 and 2017 and receiving training in the use of firearms.

On Friday, the defendant appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing via video link from Belmarsh prison.

Mr Justice Sweeney said his case would be heard by the Recorder of London at the Old Bailey.

A plea hearing was set for February 11 next year with a provisional trial from September 12 next year.

The defendant, who spoke only to confirm his identity, was remanded into custody.
