Michelin star chef Tom Kerridge let us take a look inside The Butcher’s Tap and Grill as he launches a new counter-to-grill menu and hands the reins to The Hand and Flowers' former head chef.
On walking inside you are faced with a butcher's counter from which you can now choose whatever cut and size of meat and have it cooked for you whilst you sit and enjoy the pub atmosphere.
The pub offers draught beer including Rebellion Lager, Guinness and Estrella Damm whilst a carefully chosen wine list of five red, four white and rosé is available too.
Tom Kerridge and his team talked us through the changes and the various meats on offer which are also used at his other Michelin starred restaurants.
He said: “The Butcher’s Tap And Grill has an incredible chef and butcher at the helm, so it makes sense to evolve the concept to make the most of the butcher’s counter and Jamie’s talent as a chef.
“We are aiming for a casual, fun and family-friendly counter-to-grill pub where guests can just pop in for a locally brewed pint to watch the footie, or enjoy a hand-cut steak from the counter, grilled to order with a cracking glass of red.”
For the additional £12.50 grill charge, you can enjoy the restaurant service in Marlow which has an excellent range of places to eat but The Butcher’s Tap and Grill is up there with the best.
The menu still offers the popular burgers and hot dogs, plus and a range of pub snacks and you can continue to order via the takeaway menu, which can be found on The Butcher’s Tap and Grill app.
We were let in to taste some of what his new menu has to offer and it didn’t disappoint.
The food experience
On arrival, we got to try out mac ‘n’ cheese bites with truffle mayonnaise and Cumberland sausage scotch eggs. These were both bitesize starters which I could have snacked on all day if I had the chance to. We were then treated to a platter of the starters which inclueded the butcher’s terrine, classic smoked salmon and a half-pint of shell-on prawns with a Marie rose sauce.
The prawns were of a good size and after peeling away the shell they were perfect to dip into the Marie rose sauce. The smoked salmon was served with a cream cheese dip, and salmon lovers would not be disappointed with the quality. The terrine was tasty on its own but it would have gone well alongside bread or toast to spread it onto. Overall, the starters were great and it definitely got the taste buds going for what was up next.
Next, a range of meat was cooked and served to us. First, we had a try of the pork and lamb chops. Usually, I am not the biggest fan of pork or lamb chops but these were cooked to perfection and had a lot of meat to them. Anyone who would usually go for pork or lamb chops should definitely try these out as they are some of the best I have had.
Now for the main event, a selection of different steaks. These were all amazing, if you like steak then this is somewhere you need to come. It was great to see where your steak had come from too (literally the butcher's counter in front of your eyes). The steaks are served with either béarnaise, peppercorn, or truffle butter with burnt onion and lettuce. It was the highlight of the night for me and the choice from the butcher's counter will leave you wanting to come back and try them all.
For dessert, we were served a whipped Biscoff cheesecake with Dulce de leche and a milk chocolate mousse. Both were great but the cheesecake was incredible and especially worth a go if you’re a Biscoff enthusiast.
The team was so attentive and made sure to look after you from advising you at the butcher’s counter on the best cut of meat to making sure you always had a drink in hand. Overall all the food was superb, everything we tried was delicious and I will definitely be revisiting in the near future to try it out again.
