Wycombe take on Charlton Athletic this weekend in what will be a big match for both sides.

Wanderers are hoping to get back to winning ways after failing to win their last three fixtures in all competitions, whilst the Addicks have only won once in the league this season.

Despite that, the South Londoners have got a very impressive record against Gareth Ainsworth’s men, as Charlton have not lost any of the six league matches they have played Wycombe – winning all six games.

In fact, the only blemish on their overall head-to-head record was when the two faced each other in December 2006 in the League Cup, and the Chairboys, who were in League Two, knocked out the then Premier League side 1-0 at the Valley, with Jermaine Easter getting the winner.

However, that was then and this is now, and to gear up for the match this Saturday, I spoke to Louis Mendez from BBC London Sport and Charlton Live to see what he thinks ahead of the clash at Adams Park.

What have you made of Charlton’s start of the season so far?

LM: "It’s been a major disappointment.

"Results are poor - the Addicks have lost four of their opening six - but the displays are just as concerning.

"Charlton are struggling to control games and have been too easy to hold at arm’s length so far.

"They aren’t creating chances and have looked suspect at the back.

"They paid the price for a slow transfer window and will hope that the six or so bodies that were added to the squad towards the end of the window will play a part in kick-starting the campaign.

"It needs to happen fast."

Were you expecting a better start to the campaign?

LM: "Absolutely.

"Nigel Adkins was largely successful after joining the club towards the end of last season, losing just once in ten outings as Charlton finished outside the top six on goal difference.

"Expectation levels were high amongst the Addicks support following the arrival of new owner Thomas Sandgaard, who has looked to steady the ship following years of mismanagement at the club.

"The anticipation of an enjoyable campaign, coupled with the dire results we’ve seen so far, have left a hugely disgruntled fan base."

Charlton’s league record against Wycombe is very impressive – can you see that continuing on Saturday?

LM: "Charlton will certainly need to buck their ideas up if it is to continue.

"There can’t be many sides that the south Londoners have a 100 percent win record against in league football but in fairness they have always met when the Addicks would have been heavy favourites and all those wins came by the odd goal.

"Saturday is a bit different - plenty will fancy the Chairboys in this one, particularly with their perfect home record so far.

Who are the men main Wycombe need to be on the look out for at Adams Park this weekend?

LM: "There’s plenty of players in the side that can be dangerous on their day but have flattered to deceive thus far.

"Diallang Jaiyesimi is a tricky winger who can bamboozle defenders when fed the ball but hasn’t seen enough of it so far.

"Charlie Kirk, a recent addition from Crewe, likewise on the opposite flank.

"But one-man Addicks fans will be pinning a lot of hope on is Birmingham loanee Jonathan Leko.

Wycombe drew their previous game last week in Oxford

"He’s just returned for a second spell with the club after impressing in the Championship two years ago and got off to a fine start with a goal during the loss to Cheltenham on Saturday.

"He’s direct, pacey, and will be a handful.

It is still early days, but, do you think both sides will be in the hunt for promotion this season?

LM: "You’ll certainly expect Wycombe to be there for thereabouts when it comes to the top six considering the work Gareth Ainsworth has done over the years and the squad available to him.

The last time these two sides played was back in 2019

"With Charlton, at the moment it’s probably more hope than expectation but if the new bodies in the squad can gel then there’s certainly the personnel available to make a go of it.

How do you see it going this weekend?

LM: "Charlton need to stop the rot.

"They’ll take a draw all day long this weekend and so would I.

"1-1."
