A team of volunteers who have given up over 2,000 hours to help Wycombe Wanderers prepare for the new season were brought together and thanked by the club.

Marking the EFL Season Launch day owner Rob Couhig, director Missy Couhig and manager Gareth Ainsworth hosted the event to show their appreciation to the volunteers.

The group has been jetwashing, painting, strimming, decorating, cleaning, repairing, desludging all in a bid to get Adams Park ready for the new season.

Rob Couhig, who previously owned the New Orleans Zephyrs baseball team, believes that this level of involvement would never happen at a professional sports club in America.

He also told how his nephew Pete Couhig asked two volunteers to water the training pitch on the condition it would be a couple of days but weeks later they are still helping out.

The Wycombe chairman said: “We are here for our volunteers and they have done a special job, they really have, the place looks magnificent.

“In the States, you wouldn’t have this, in some amateurs teams obviously but at a professional club to have the depth of fan involvement doesn’t happen so it is heartwarming.

“That’s why we wanted to do something for them and give back to them.”

Lisa Bowker, who has been volunteering for over eight years, revealed when she first started the club couldn’t even afford paint.

The club now was able to present all the volunteers with a coaching top with their names or initials on.

She said: “The railings we had to paint with whatever paint we had, the old dugouts I had to mix some drain paint and gloss just so I could do it up because they were rusting.

“We couldn’t even afford the paint so we supplied that ourselves so we could get the jobs done but we don’t have to do that now thankfully.

“For us to be able to a part of what we’ve got her now, that’s this group of volunteers legacy.”

Volunteers at Wycombe have always played a role and manager Gareth Ainsworth paid tribute to the group who continue to help out even after the Couhig takeover.

He added: “With all the investment we’ve had and all the hype of the Championship surrounding the club, we have still had one core group that has been here since day one.

“They are Wycombe Wanderers, they bleed quarters if you cut them open.

“What they will do is endless for this club and they do it for nothing, they do it for the love of the club.”

With the season starting this weekend, Missy Couhig could not contain her excitement for fans to be able to see all the hard work that has been put into the ground.

Missy Couhig said: “The family atmosphere we have found here at Adams Park is so warm and so welcoming and we are just thrilled to be part of it and welcome you back into your own home.”

Wycombe will face Accrington Stanley on Saturday, July 7 at 3pm in the season opener.
