A PUB in Burnham has temporarily closed after a number of staff members were pinged to self-isolate from the NHS Test and Trace app.

Staff at The Old Five Bells, issued a statement on the pubs Facebook page informing customers over the situation.

The village pub will be closed over the weekend and will update customers on when they plan to reopen soon.

It comes after NHS figures showed 618,903 alerts were sent to users of the coronavirus app in the week to July 14, a period before England’s restrictions were lifted and more social contact was allowed.

The pubs statement said: "We’ve been hit by a pingdemic. 90 per cent of our team have been pinged (don’t worry though, we’re okay - we’ve all been doing lateral flow tests every morning for weeks), therefore unfortunately we will be unable to open today."

The pub said they will contact customers to rearrange bookings.

Adding: "Apologies to anyone who had booked we’ve contacted you all and left voicemails for those who didn’t answer. We will update in due course, stay safe."

Confederation of British Industry director general Tony Danker said: “The current approach to self-isolation is closing down the economy rather than opening it up.”

Businesses have already exhausted contingency plans to get in extra staff and are “at risk of grinding to a halt in the next few weeks”, he said.
