Roundabouts across Wycombe were last week given a patriotic makeover in support of England's Euro 2020 campaign - but the council says it "cannot condone" the mysterious painter's work.
Dozens of roundabouts, including ones at the bottom of Treadaway Hill in Loudwater, Hughenden Avenue in High Wycombe and at Hazlemere crossroads, were painted overnight last week to make them look like the St George's flag.
The move was largely supported by residents who said the sight cheered them up.
Since then, videos have appeared on social media of council workers painting over a red cross on a roundabout, which led to anger from some residents - although Buckinghamshire Council has confirmed this did not happen in High Wycombe, and the video was actually filmed in Windsor.
Buckinghamshire Council's transport chief has said that while they are fully behind the England football team, they "cannot condone" the roundabout pating.
Cllr Steve Broadbent told the Bucks Free Press: "While we appreciate residents are showing their support for the England team, we urge them to find other, more appropriate and safer ways to do so.
"There will be a cost to repaint the roundabouts and also a safety risk to the workers who take on the task.
"We are of course fully behind the England team and contrary to reports on social media, have not yet painted over the red flags on roundabouts in Bucks, however, we cannot condone this action and ask residents in the strongest possible terms not to do this because of the associated costs and safety issues attached to having to repaint them.”
Council leader Martin Tett has also spoken about the roundabouts on his Twitter page, saying: "Not sure I would support the painting over of the roundabout roundels.
"There is a danger drivers or cyclists would be distracted and people possibly killed or injured."
England will face Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final on Wednesday at 8pm.
