A child walking a dog was approached by a man who unclipped the dog’s lead from the collar in Brays Lane, Hyde Heath.
Both the dog and the child ran off and fortunately the dog was not taken.
The man is described as a white man in his late twenties wearing a black fleece and jeans and he is believed to have left in a large black van.
Officers are investigating the incident and want to hear from anyone who has dash-cam or doorbell camera footage from the incident on May 14.
