UPDATE: Greene King respond to backlash over potential name change to the Dairy Maid
The people of Aylesbury have expressed their anger after a popular pub within the town could have its name changed.
The Dairy Maid, which is based on Dunsham Lane on the A4157 could be known as ‘The Corner House’, after a planning application for a refurbishment was submitted to Buckinghamshire Council in March.
If approved, the Greene King-owned pub could have its well-known cream exterior changed to a green/turquoise coat.
Following the revelation, many Aylesburians and regulars have expressed their annoyance at the idea of the pub’s name being changed.
In the official planning application, which can be seen by the public, one of the objections to the name change reads: “I am objecting to this on the grounds of the name being changed.
“I urge the council to approve the plans on the guarantee that the name remains The Dairy Maid, as it has done since it opened in early/mid-1960s.
“The name has historical ties with the town, named after a messenger cart that used to travel through the town to and from London.
“The Corner House has no relevance or history to it.”
Another says: “There has been a suggestion that there is going to be a name, why is this necessary, I lived in Aylesbury all my life and it’s always been the Dairy Maid.
“This will be another example of eroding the history of the town.”

This resident said: “The Dairy Maid is a well-known local landmark and holds its original name.
“There is no good reason to change the name, other than corporate greed trying to make the name more politically correct while riding roughshod over local history.

“Allowing changes like this, just turns towns into characterless and bland facsimiles.
“I strongly object to any name change of this pub.”
One resident added: “Please retain the original name of The Dairy Maid.
“We have lost so many original buildings and landmarks in the town. This is a nod to the original farming area it stands on.”
However, some are suggesting that changing the pub’s name could have its benefits.
This person said: “This pub has been very scruffy for a number of years and deserves a facelift and a name change.

“The Dairy Maid is synonymous with a run-down scruffy pub.
“A revamp and name change is a great idea - they need to take care of the car park to the left of the property as this always floods in a rainstorm.”
If approved, this could help attract new customers to the pub which is based along the A4157 – a road that takes motorists from Aylesbury to London.
