Bucks is home to some of the worst roads in the country – with 2019 seeing more than 70,000 potholes recorded in the area over the previous four years.
At the time, the county was ranked number 10 in a list of local authority areas with the highest number of potholes, as an insurance provider found 72,551 road defects were reported in Bucks from 2015 to 2018.
And the problem has continued despite Buckinghamshire Council and the previous Bucks County Council ploughing millions of pounds over the years into fixing our roads.
With government funding to repair damaged roads in Bucks slashed by a quarter for the coming year, the County Councils Network said in February the reduction in funding across England means councils will “have no choice” but to cancel planned road maintenance projects.
The BFP reported in February that Bucks Council would receive £13.1 million – £4.7 million less than the £17.8 million provided in the current financial year – to maintain roads in 2021-22.
The BFP has covered the pothole crisis over the years, with many residents and even some councillors getting their tape measures out to show the dire state of our roads.
And of course, who can forget former reporter Andy Carswell donning a spaceman’s outfit and hopping through potholes in High Wycombe in 2010, after residents described Kingsmead Road as worse than ‘the surface of the moon’.
