I have printed a vintage aerial view of this part of Marlow before, but this one is taken (possibly on the same day) looking the other way, in a northerly direction – from above Chapel Street, and showing considerably more detail around the Rookery area.

As with the previous one I am unsure who took this: I said before it is probably just a bit too early for one of Malcolm McIntyre-Ure’s mid to late 1960s aerial views, but the newly built Police Station is in place so that provides a clue as to being the very early 1960s.

This original photograph has “Arcadia” stamped on the rear but that means nothing to me.

Here are a few points of interest:

1) The Methodist Chapel in Spittal Street

2) The old Cinema building, which was finally demolished in the early 70s, ending its chequered life housing a plastic jewellery factory

3) Prior to Tesco arriving in town in a purpose built store this was Aughton’s Greengrocers

4) The Cross Keys, which would have been a Simonds house back then

5) The Horns pub with Tillion’s yard and garages behind

6) Morris’ Field

7) The Liston Hall

8) Claremont Gardens

9) Cedar House, top of Glade Road

10) The Plough pub and the adjoining line of cottages. I was surprised to see that Prospect House (the subject of a column some weeks ago) was still there to the left. I had not been able to find any listing of it after the war so I assumed it was demolished around that time, but it now appears it was renamed “The Swallows” and remained until the late 1960s.

11) The Rookery Estate with the mansion just visible at the Chapel Street end

12) Lynch’s D.I.Y. yard, where you will find a kebab wagon these days. They moved here when their little shop in the old Greyhound building in Spittal Street was demolished.

13) The new Police Station in Dean Street. This was built soon after the late 1950s demolition of most of this street, so that is one reason to assume a date of around 1961/2 for the picture. The former police building can be seen not far away in Trinity Road.

16) Marlow Football Club. The triangular plot to the left was their training area, the building in the corner being the Band Hall
